Shadow Play
The Job Shadowing (JS) programme was introduced in 2009 to ACS (International) IB Diploma students who are keen to gain an insight into industries which they are interested in. The programme spans about a week and gives students a better idea of what it is like to work in the field, as well as the challenges and satisfaction that come with it. Through onsite observation and conversation, participating students receive guidance and advice that will benefit them in their career choices.
In 2023, nine business owners and executives from HVMC offered to be industry mentors to a total of 18 students under the JS programme, during the school holidays in March, June and September.
The intent of HVMC participation is to support ACS (International) and to build trust for the relationship to evolve from a short transactional period towards a longer term conversation, and deeper relationship centred around meeting the spiritual and emotional needs of the young intern.
JS participants share their personal experiences:
“My short stint at Activiste for business consultancy afforded me rich hands-on experiences as well as insights. I was given opportunities, such as meeting a wide range of clients to work on improving their business strategies, which helped me to learn about the unique aspects of running a business. The staff and higher management were very helpful, answering my questions and providing useful advice. This experience was inspirational and affirming in my career choice.”
- Einna Parekh (5 LSG) – March 2023
“My company, Activiste, decided to participate in the ACS (International) JS programme, as a means of connecting with students and giving them a glimpse into a possible career role they may consider later on. JS allows these young men and women to follow you, or a person in your company, for three to five days, to see how you work. It’s a great opportunity to demonstrate how God’s hand shapes our work life.”
- Kim Faulkner
“My job shadowing experience at Ramdas & Wong was truly one that I will never forget. Having spent five days there, I was able to learn about legal work, and more about the profession itself. Being able to work on legal tasks and experience what lawyers do daily, has increased my interest to study law. It was truly an opportunity that I am grateful for.”
- Zoe Calista Monteiro (5GHK) – March 2023
“It was wonderful to be able to answer the call of the Church to provide internship opportunities to two students of the School."
- Jawharilal Balachandran
“It was an amazing experience to be able to learn from the JS programme with Centurion Corporation Limited. It gave me an insight into the Finance and Accounting world, as I learnt so much about what accountants do and the skills that are required. Overall, it was a productive and well-spent four days.”
- Sara Kwok (6THO) – June 2023
"The JS programme is a wonderful opportunity to meet bright young minds and discuss issues that matter to the next generation. Thank you for the privilege of serving in this ministry."
- Rebecca Chen
“When Hari first approached me to be involved in the JS programme, the idea appealed to me, but the first challenge was that I work permanently from home. Hari quickly responded, “Don’t worry, God will provide…”
Keeping our faith in God not only resulted in a student signing up with our company for a week in June 2023, but He also provided an office from the School’s Higher Education department for our use. During the week, we managed to conduct a few MS Team meetings with clients in the region as well as supply chain visits and meetings in Singapore. Overall, it was an excellent experience and I was blessed to be able to spend time to mentor a student from the School.”
