Let’s Study the Bible!
Disciple 1 Course
On behalf of the Discipleship and Nurture committee, we declare God’s goodness for the successful run of the first Disciple 1 class in HVMC, which started in February 2022. It was a 34-week course, and study groups moved through the Biblical story, from Creation to the New Jerusalem.
We are grateful to Pastor Jeremy for spurring us on with his faith that God will send the participants – there was a total of 12 members of our Church who signed up. God indeed provided, and we started with an intergenerational group. Throughout the sessions, He enabled both our attendance, desire and capacity to learn.
The study, sharing and authentic friendships formed, speak volumes of God at work.
Great is Thy faithfulness!

I am always curious about how to study the Bible in its entirety, rather than a book at a time. So, Disciple 1 appeared to be the answer, and, with the invitation from Pastor Jeremy, I enrolled myself, knowing that it was going to be tough because of the commitment and uncertainty of the year ahead. The course helped me to strengthen my faith and boosted my confidence to understand what it means to be a Christian, to be “set apart” from the world without feeling ashamed of what others might think.
Going for Disciple 1 comes with a price
The many hours put into studying the Bible to prepare for the sessions, involved quite a lot of sacrifice; however, this is nothing compared to what Christ has done for us. At the end of the course, the time spent definitely turned out to be very fruitful.

I made long and lasting friendships with everyone in the class, as I got to know them on a deeper level. I believe that as a Christian, we should learn how to be like Jesus to make disciples of all nations… (Matthew 28:19-20). With the knowledge I gained from Disciple 1, I am able to confidently share the Bible and about Christ, with those I meet in my daily life.

Through 34 weeks of in-depth study, Disciple 1 gave us a bird’s eye view of the whole Bible in chronological order. It directed us to look at the context and the writer’s motivation for penning each book, which I found most insightful, and reminded me that there is always a story behind each person I meet in my daily life.
Group discussion and character role play helped in collaboration and added fun to the study. As God’s Word unites people, our group, despite diverse age groups and backgrounds, has formed new bonds of friendship. Since each participant had the opportunity to facilitate a session, we witnessed God directing us, individually, to lead with our own unique personalities and gifts.
The course drew us to go deeper with God and with one another. More importantly, it prompted us to move from our human condition to be His disciples, to display Christ in our lives.
